Peace Vase

Moser glassworks created a glass symbol of peace

Prague, September 21, 2022 – The urgency to actively pursue peace and maintain it was officially formulated by a UN declaration more than forty years ago. Since then, humanity regularly celebrates the International Day of Peace on September 21, emphasizing the importance of a life without armed conflicts. In response to the current situation, when we more than ever realize how fragile peace is, Moser Glassworks has resumed production of the Peace vase designed by the prominent Czech artist Jiří Šuhájek.

The Peace vase was first produced twenty years ago, on the anniversary of the founding of the Karlovy Vary glassworks. The author sought inspiration for its creation in humankind’s fateful moments, which he materialized into a vase metaphorically opening up to the entire world. The timeless crystal Peace vase has now been launched in a new color variant and in a limited edition of merely 165 pieces symbolizing 165 years of Moser Glassworks’ existence.

About the Author

Jiří Šuhájek worked at the Moser Glassworks in the years 1972–1978 as an artist and created several exceptional collections for the company. He has received numerous foreign and domestic awards for his work. His creations can be found in collections of the world's most prominent museums and galleries, including the Corning Museum of Glass in New York or the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

About the Technique / Grinding

Grinding is a key glass refining technique that requires hours of precise, patient work. It is one of the most difficult manual production techniques in existence and demands true mastery of experienced glassmakers. The glass is ground using abrasives (coarse granular materials) and grinding wheels, which gradually remove glass material. When shaping a glass object, the initial intensive coarse grinding is followed by finer grinding which smoothens the surface. Polishing provides the finishing touch by restoring the shine and translucence of the ground surface. The edges of the object can be sharp or rounded, convex or asymmetrical or a combination of the above. If a pattern is added to enrich the final piece, it can be complex, cover the entire surface of the product or complement it by becoming a subtle detail.
